Summer of Play at Prior Park

Summer of Play returns to Prior Park with more fun and relaxed outdoor activities for the children to discover. Lawn games available in the Cabinet near the top of the garden, and by the Tea Cabin at the bottom of the garden. Find the play library by the Tea Cabin, perfect to pop in for a refreshing drink while your little ones explore the games on offer. Don't forget to use our bug spotting sheets and explorer backpacks, available to borrow from the main reception. This year the National Trust is partnering with Pokémon. Thanks to this partnership, children will be given a Pokémon sticker book. Add a sticker every time you visit a Summer of Play site.

July Open Days at the Museum of Bath Stone

About At this free micromuseum discover the story of the stone of Combe Down, its geology, archaeology, social history, ecology (with important bat populations) and engineering. Bath owes much of its character and architectural harmony to the stone from which it is built, Bath Stone. This material has been exploited since Roman times but came to its peak in the 18th century. The nearby village of Combe Down was a great source of such stone, which was originally laid down in the Jurassic period in warm tropical shallow seas. The city's buildings are made of this stone hewn by hand using axes, saws (frigbobs and razzers), picks and candlelight. Being a freestone, which means it can be carved from any side, some buildings are highly decorated. Many great buildings in the UK also owe their character to Bath Stone e.g. Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, Brighton Royal Pavilion, plus several abbeys and cathedrals. It was transported worldwide and has been designated a World Heritage Stone in its own right. So, we have a UNESCO World Heritage city built of a World Heritage Stone. Free entry.

Festival of Archaeology at Prior Park

Prior Park takes part once again in the Festival of Archaeology, with walks and information on previous digs and projects. Information will be on display about previous digs in the Pasture, as will old finds from previous projects, including the dams project. On selected dates, a volunteer will be available to answer questions and discuss findings. You will be able to view a timeline of the last 33 years, since the National Trust acquired Prior Park, outlining its restoration and changes over the years. Walk the site and find interpretation on different areas of importance, such as the Bath House. There are also two pre-bookable guided walks with the lead archaeologist from previous digs, available to book on the walks' event page (22 & 28 July).
