Light Show

The presence of light is something we generally take for granted. The familiar flipping of a light switch or the constancy of the sun is part of our daily lives. Yet the natural phenomenon of light is essential to everything we see, know and experience. It has been harnessed, generated and studied by scientists and artists alike. This multi-disciplinary exhibition brings together objects from across the University’s museum collections, including art and design, science, medicine and natural history, inviting visitors to consider how light inspires art, impacts nature and informs discovery. Traces of Care

This exhibition explores connections between historical and contemporary works across different generations. Themes of care, labour, memory, domesticity and visibility will be present, showing how these connections still resonate today. Many of the artists represented in the collections were once students or members of staff, and their work and experiences form an important part of Dundee's creative history. Through these shared themes, the exhibition will show how artists leave identifiable traces of themselves in their work and how artworks can act as records of lived experience, connecting generations through shared concerns and perspectives. Visitors are invited to reflect on how certain themes of care, labour and lived experience continue to be carried through generations of practice. Curated by DJCAD MFA Curatorial Practice student Shannon Farley, the exhibition brings together material from the University’s Museum Collections with additional works on loan. Mon-Fri 9.30am-7pm (last entry 5pm)

Exhibition: Endurance in 3D

Get the chance to be up close to a remarkably detailed 3D model of the Endurance shipwreck at Discovery Point, thanks to a collaboration between the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust and Dundee Heritage Trust. One of the most accurate representations of a deep-ocean heritage site to ever be produced, the 3D model offers an unprecedented opportunity to explore the wreck of the Endurance up close for the very first time; revealing details down to the grain of the timbers and the scattered artefacts on the seabed. Lost beneath Antarctic ice for more than a century, the wreck of Endurance was discovered in 2022 during the Endurance22 expedition, led by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. Located more than 3,000 metres below the surface of the Weddell Sea, the site remains one of the most remote and protected heritage locations on Earth. Because the wreck is safeguarded under the Antarctic Treaty System and a strict Conservation Plan, it must remain undisturbed. Instead, the Endurance22 team used pioneering non-invasive archaeological techniques to record the wreck in extraordinary detail, capturing over 25,000 high-resolution images alongside laser and sonar data to create a scientifically precise digital twin of the site. This 3D printed model of the wreck translates that data into physical form.
