What's on in Hoo St Werburgh

Kent, England

The proper local stuff the big sites overlook — from open mic nights to dog shows, toddler groups to talks about local history that turn out to be more interesting than you'd think. Hoo St Werburgh keeps its calendar surprisingly full, and we've tracked down the lot. Coffee mornings that turn into proper catch-ups. Quiz nights where the same team wins every week and everyone pretends not to mind. Craft fairs, food markets, community screenings, and workshops teaching you things you didn't know you wanted to learn. All the things that make living somewhere feel like actually living somewhere, not just sleeping there.

In Our Own Time: Shared Reflections in Creativity and Wellbeing

This exhibition brings together artworks created within a Shaw Trust & Live Well Kent funded person-centred art as therapy programme that places process, presence, and personal rhythm at its core. Across a series of workshops in abstract drawing, painting, printmaking, and clay, participants engaged with materials as a means of exploration rather than mastery — allowing gesture, texture, and form to emerge through attentive experimentation. The title speaks to pace. In a culture often defined by urgency, productivity, and comparison, in our own time proposes an alternative tempo — one that honours the unfolding of insight, memory, emotion, and growth without pressure or predetermined outcome. Within the therapeutic space, creativity becomes less about achievement and more about attunement: to one’s inner landscape, to the tactile dialogue between hand and material, and to the subtle shifts that occur when expression is given room to breathe. The works presented here are not endpoints but traces of encounter — moments of reflection made visible. Some are bold and expansive; others quiet and restrained. Each carries the imprint of a process rooted in curiosity, vulnerability, and self-trust. Together, they form a collective testament to creativity as a restorative practice: one that allows individuals to move, pause, return, and begin again — always in their own time.
