What's on in Hempstead

Kent, England

From farmers' markets to craft fairs that'll actually have something you want to buy — Hempstead knows how to put on a do. We're talking proper local events here: quiz nights that get genuinely competitive, coffee mornings that serve actual decent coffee (not the instant stuff), and village fêtes that are surprisingly well organised. No stadium concerts or festivals that cost a week's wages, just the good stuff happening in village halls, community centres, and that one pub everyone knows about. We're here to make sure you don't miss any of it.

In Our Own Time: Shared Reflections in Creativity and Wellbeing

This exhibition brings together artworks created within a Shaw Trust & Live Well Kent funded person-centred art as therapy programme that places process, presence, and personal rhythm at its core. Across a series of workshops in abstract drawing, painting, printmaking, and clay, participants engaged with materials as a means of exploration rather than mastery — allowing gesture, texture, and form to emerge through attentive experimentation. The title speaks to pace. In a culture often defined by urgency, productivity, and comparison, in our own time proposes an alternative tempo — one that honours the unfolding of insight, memory, emotion, and growth without pressure or predetermined outcome. Within the therapeutic space, creativity becomes less about achievement and more about attunement: to one’s inner landscape, to the tactile dialogue between hand and material, and to the subtle shifts that occur when expression is given room to breathe. The works presented here are not endpoints but traces of encounter — moments of reflection made visible. Some are bold and expansive; others quiet and restrained. Each carries the imprint of a process rooted in curiosity, vulnerability, and self-trust. Together, they form a collective testament to creativity as a restorative practice: one that allows individuals to move, pause, return, and begin again — always in their own time.
