The Cider Shed

Are you a small-scale cider producer? Whether small scale means a couple of demijohns or a couple of hundred litres, you know who you are – you make cider for pleasure not profit, it’s made for the consumption of you and your friends, and not for the “general public”. If that is you then you might be interested in joining the Cider Shed, a small group of like-minded individuals interested in comparing notes and learning from each other. What is that white mould that sometimes forms on the top of the cider while it’s fermenting? Is it dangerous? Can I use just desert apples or must I only use cider ones? Do different yeasts make a difference to the final product? Why is my cider so incredibly – unbearably – dry? Is there anything I can do about it? Some of my bottles exploded last summer. Why? Can I stop it happening again? What does your cider taste like? These are the kind of things we’ll be talking about and probably a good deal more! Environment Group Meeting

The Fownhope Environment Group brings together village people and Parish Council to undertake activities that benefit the environment of Fownhope and positively impact climate and ecology. Over the past few years the group has been busy – including: Setting up The Fownhope Car Developing the always-ready-for-action ‘Fownhope Wheelbarrows’ group – taking on works that help care for our local environment Developing and promoting the village ‘Dark Skies’ policy and activities, including the wonderful bench on the Rec Supporting Citizen Science activities to assess pollution of local waterways including the River Wye Developing Fownhope Parish Council’s Declaration of a Climate Emergency – and working with local partners to put in place actions to support this declaration Arranging village visits to Envirosort, and liaising with Herefordshire Council to understand and share recycling opportunities locally Fundraising and coordinating the installation of the community EV charger that now lives beside the Pavilion Supporting the planting of local native plants in hedgerows … initiating conversations about the development of this very calendar as a resource for local activities. Everyone is welcome to come along to our meetings – they are friendly and fun, and usually last about an hour – sometimes a little longer. The group is currently co-chaired by Gareth Williams (from the Parish Council) and Kate Gathercole (from the local community).

We are a social club that play for fun in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We do not enter any club competitions or have any teams. Fownhope table tennis group, having started in 2005, runs regular weekly sessions from 10-12 every Wednesday morning throughout the year, each session costs just £2 pp. The group does not enter competitions or any leagues, but is a social and friendly group that enjoys playing for exercise and fun. Community Library

The Community Library was opened in 2012, with the help of the Parish Council and use of the Community Room at Faulkner House. It is a warm comfortable room with easy chairs and everyone is welcome for a chat and a cuppa. There is a large selection of fiction and non-fiction, and a strong section on local history, travel and walking books/OS maps. With over 5000 items including DVDs and CDs and a good choice of children’s books, there is something for everyone. We have excellent links with St Mary’s School and welcome pre-school children every Wednesday in term time to borrow books and hear a story. All residents of Fownhope and nearby villages are eligible to join and membership is free thanks to the friendly volunteer team, help from the Parish Council and donations from the Friends of Fownhope Library.

Gardening Themed Tea Party

An informal and welcoming gardening-themed afternoon will be held in the Community Room at Faulkner House on Wednesday 15 April, from 2–4pm, while the library is open. There will be a selection of gardening books to browse, with some available to take home. Vegetable and flower seeds from the recent Seed Swap will be shared, along with tomato plants for anyone who would like to grow their own. Tea and cakes will be available, providing a chance to meet others and enjoy a relaxed afternoon. The event also aims to raise awareness of the library and the Community Room as a space for local use, as many residents are not yet familiar with it. There is no charge to attend, but donations towards new library books are welcome.
