Join writer and teacher, Anna Dempsey, for this five-week course of guided fiction writing, sharing words in a tender, supportive community. This course is perfect for writers of any stage who want to explore their voice, try new ideas, finish a writing project or connect with fellow creatives in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Each week, you will focus on different elements of short story and novel writing including plot, dialogue, character, setting and pacing. You’ll be looking at spring inspired writing and pop culture to do this. Think the ridiculous film Spring Breakers meets Anne of Green Gables meets Mary Oliver in a field of sunflowers. These five weeks are a great time to start a new short story, novel or dive back into some old idea notebooks. The garden is looked after collectively by SET Social members, local neighbours, and anyone curious enough to get their hands a little dirty. We grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers, and care for the space with curiosity, collaboration, and kindness at the heart of things. Sunday sessions are open, informal, and pressure-free. No gardening experience is needed and there’s no expectation to stay the whole time. Bring yourself, a mug for tea, and if you like, a plant or cutting to share. Want to get involved? Braiding Sweetgrass Reading Circle

To celebrate the return of spring, join us at SET Social for the Braiding Sweetgrass Reading Circle, a small reading group exploring Robin Wall Kimmerer’s influential book Braiding Sweetgrass. Meeting every two weeks from 15 March to 24 May, the circle invites participants to read and discuss the book together over tea in a relaxed and welcoming setting. Each session will focus on a different section of the text, beginning with the introduction at the first meeting. Drawing on her life as an Indigenous scientist, a mother and a woman, Kimmerer explores how other living beings such as plants, animals and ecosystems offer lessons about reciprocity, care and responsibility. Through stories that move between ecology, science and Indigenous knowledge, the book explores our relationship with the earth and the importance of living in respectful kinship with the more-than-human world. The reading circle will be a space to discuss these ideas together and reflect on how they might influence our daily lives. If gardeners attend, the group may also explore ways to connect some of the book’s teachings with the SET Social Community Garden. Open to anyone interested in nature, gardening or anti-colonial perspectives on our relationship with the land.

SET 91 Open Series – A PATCH Sunday Salon

SET 91 continues the Open Series with A PATCH Sunday Salon, an exhibition and live programme led by PATCH, an interdisciplinary collective working across architecture, art and research. Bringing together works by the collective and its members, the exhibition explores diasporic experiences of the city and considers how architecture can be understood through alternative, community-led lenses. The exhibition presents a retrospective of PATCH’s past projects alongside new work currently in development by the collective’s founders. Through sculpture, photography, publications and painting, the programme reflects on themes that have shaped PATCH’s practice to date, from food and the act of holding space to the evolving notion of home. Alongside the exhibition, the programme will include a live talk and Q&A reflecting on some of PATCH’s past projects, as well as a conversational salon returning to themes of home and holding space, asking how diasporic communities can be centred within fast-paced metropolitan environments in ways that are tangible, supportive and meaningful. Why this matters In the context of ongoing gentrification, displacement and urban redevelopment, particularly in London, diasporic and marginalised communities are often disproportionately affected.
