What's on in Becontree Heath

Greater London, England

Becontree Heath sits just east of Dagenham and has a quiet rhythm that makes for a perfect weeknight stroll. The library puts on sessions where little ones can rhyme away the afternoon, while other groups find their own corner to play out ideas. It is a place where neighbours know each other's names without needing to shout across the street. Evenings bring quiz nights and open mics that keep the local scene lively without raising a fuss. Near Here gathers all these bits of local life into one spot so you do not have to hunt for dates on a Sunday. You can find your next plan here, no matter how much or little time you have left in the week.

Permacomputing club

How can we rethink our relationship to harmful technologies? Join the Permacomputing Club every Monday at SET Social for a weekly meet-up exploring this question and more sustainable ways to use and think about digital tools. Inspired by permaculture, permacomputing is an anti-capitalist project that challenges the environmental and social damage caused by modern technology. Drawing on ideas from degrowth, ecologism, decolonial thinking and intersectional feminism, it looks for alternatives to the energy-intensive systems shaping today’s tech landscape. Each session emphasises collaborative discussion over solo tinkering. Participants are invited to share a problem they’ve read or experienced, where they’ll receive feedback and work together to find solutions. In a culture dominated by harmful tech practices, including AI, the Permacomputing Club aims to build a more thoughtful space to explore new and different possibilities. All are welcome, though women and non-binary participants are particularly encouraged to join. Please bring your own tech and have a look at our guiding principles before attending: permacomputing.net/Principles. Event details Date: Every MondayTime: 6.30-7.30pmTickets: Free entry.
