Join us this summer as we bring archaeology to life with the Festival of Archaeology. Across two weeks, discover Roman life and the history of the site through a changing programme of archaeological activities, demonstrations, and living history characters. Dr Quintus: Medicine in Roman Britain

Join Dr Quintus at Chedworth Roman Villa as part of the Festival of Archaeology to learn how medicine worked in Roman times. Using examples from the natural world, he will explain how plants and simple ingredients were used to treat common problems. Find out which herbs were used for pain relief, how wounds were cared for, and what people believed caused illness. Dr Quintus will also explore the balance between practical treatments and traditional beliefs, showing how Roman doctors combined observation with established knowledge. This is a practical look at how people understood health and illness, and the role nature played in everyday life. Discover how these approaches fitted into daily life in Roman Britain, and how some ideas about natural remedies have continued through to the present day.

Meet Flora: Plants, Grains and Daily Life

Discover the plants that shaped everyday life in Roman Britain at Chedworth Roman Villa. Drawing on evidence from the site, Flora will explain the grain samples found here, what they were used for, and what they tell us about diet and farming. Learn about the different crops grown by the Romans, how they were processed, and their importance in cooking and daily life. Flora will also explore the wider role of plants at the villa, looking in detail at the many ways they could be used; from food and medicine to practical and everyday purposes. Visitors can take part by picking up a spotter sheet and exploring the site to identify plants and features for themselves, making connections between the landscape today and its use in the past.

Meet Cookie, the Roman Cook

Meet Cookie, Chedworth’s Roman cook, bringing flavours from the past to life. On selected days during the Festival of Archaeology, she will demonstrate traditional cooking, including grinding grain into flour, baking bread the authentic Roman way, and preparing simple dishes using historic techniques. Visitors can have a go at grinding grain, using the same methods as the Romans. It’s a lively and engaging glimpse into everyday life in a Roman kitchen at the villa.
