Across two weeks, discover Roman life and the history of the site through a changing programme of archaeological activities, demonstrations, and living history characters. Dr Quintus: Medicine in Roman Britain

Join Dr Quintus at Chedworth Roman Villa as part of the Festival of Archaeology to learn how medicine worked in Roman times. Using examples from the natural world, he will explain how plants and simple ingredients were used to treat common problems. Find out which herbs were used for pain relief, how wounds were cared for, and what people believed caused illness. Dr Quintus will also explore the balance between practical treatments and traditional beliefs, showing how Roman doctors combined observation with established knowledge. This is a practical look at how people understood health and illness, and the role nature played in everyday life. Discover how these approaches fitted into daily life in Roman Britain, and how some ideas about natural remedies have continued through to the present day.

Discover the plants that shaped everyday life in Roman Britain at Chedworth Roman Villa. Drawing on evidence from the site, Flora will explain the grain samples found here, what they were used for, and what they tell us about diet and farming. Learn about the different crops grown by the Romans, how they were processed, and their importance in cooking and daily life. Flora will also explore the wider role of plants at the villa, looking in detail at the many ways they could be used; from food and medicine to practical and everyday purposes. Visitors can take part by picking up a spotter sheet and exploring the site to identify plants and features for themselves, making connections between the landscape today and its use in the past.

From March to October 2026, we will be offering free guided tours of the Villa every Monday. Join our tour guides and discover why the Villa was built here, who may have owned it, and how such a grand way of life was sustained. Hear about how the Villa was discovered and what recent excavations have revealed about life at Chedworth. Tours last approximately one hour and take place on the hour, every hour from 11am until 2pm (the last tour finishes at 3pm). On Bank Holiday Mondays, we'll be offering specialist 'Recent Discoveries' tours. Please ask for a free tour token when you arrive. Subject to volunteer availability. Maximum group size: 20 per tour No pre-booking – normal admission fees apply.

Civil War Weekend at Sudeley Castle & Gardens

Sudeley ’s walls bear the marks of the English Civil War and from 15-16th August these crucial moments in the castle’s past will be brought to life through a Civil War reenactment. Members of Lord Hopton’s Regiment of Foote , part of The King’s Army from the English Civil War Society , will be revealing the story of Prince Rupert, Charles I ’s nephew, who established headquarters at Sudeley while managing Royalist operations nearby. Featuring a skirmish in the Hop Field , pike drills with drummers on the North Lawn witnessed from the Tithe Barn and a living history village set up on the Mulberry Lawn complete with medics, washing and cooking, this event will give you all the drama, intrigue and tension of a pivotal moment in English history. You can also enjoy a taste of the past with Civil War-themed specials available in the Pavillion café during the weekend.
