Anstruther Wester sits right on the North Sea and has always been a bit of a salty character among Fife's villages. There are plenty of local groups meeting in community halls and charities holding their regular fundraisers down by the harbour. It is not about big crowds but rather the steady rhythm of people helping neighbours keep things running smoothly. The fishing heritage here means the pace is gentle, yet there is always a market stall or a charity bake sale popping up near the quay. You might catch a local choir rehearsing in the church hall or a youth club getting on with their evening project nearby. University student group Reclaim Runway, established by 3rd year student Aidan, are running a series of free community sewing classes for adults – students, staff and locals all welcome. They are for both beginners as well as accomplished machinists and will support you with hand-sewing and machine sewing basics. All materials and equipment are provided – these have been part funded by Transition, with some materials sourced from our St AndReuse store as well. Our wonderful team of volunteers can help you fix clothes, jewellery, chipped ceramics, and electrical items – all for FREE! Sharing resources, including skills and knowledge, sits at the heart of every strong community. As well as keeping your belongings out of the waste stream, you can also learn a little more about how every day objects are often quite easily fixed. We live in a highly throwaway society but it doesn’t have to be that way. There is also plenty of sewing equipment, including a machine, for you to use too, if you would like to have go yourself. And there will be FREE refreshments for you to enjoy and lovely like-minded people from across the community for you to meet. We also have a Linux specialist available to advise. Do you have an old laptop (from around 2014-2018)? Did you know that Microsoft Windows ceased to be supported on these models as of October 2025? Come and talk to Thomas, a computer specialist at the University, about how to install a free alternative operating system called Linux so you can keep using your laptop. They will explain how to ensure you keep all your data safe in the process, and they can also advise on sourcing second-hand laptops to install Linux on. More info here. We will also have a special sock and jumper darning skillshare corner so you cna come and learn how to do this yourself! We are keen to promote upcycling, where items destined for the bin have been repurposed and transformed.

We are hosting another Mini Give Away from our storage container in the car park opposite Agnes Blackadder Hall (NOT at our Reuse store). All welcome and all FREE except for adults clothes/shoes (£1 an item). You will surely find something you need, something to borrow, or something just to try out. You can, after all, return anything you don’t actually need or even want, for us to redistribute again. The aim of the game is to avoid buying new! Please be part of our local sharing and circular economy and help us re-home these lovely donations.
