17 April: The Banjo Boys - Part of the Film Expo South Festival

The Banjo Boys follows the rise of Madalitso Band, Malawian musicians Yobu Maligwa and Yosefe Kalekeni, who craft a banjo, a one-stringed babatone, and foot drum, creating a sound that moves audiences. Once mocked as madmen in Lilongwe’s streets, they meet Neil Nayar, a British musician drawn to Malawi’s spirit. Their chance encounter sparks a trio, propelling them from local busking to global stages like Sauti za Busara, WOMAD, and Joshua Tree. Facing visa struggles, personal tragedies—including original member Rice’s imprisonment for murder—and cultural tensions, their grit fuels joyous performances. Yobu’s pastoral visions, Yosefe’s resilience, and Neil’s purpose drive their bond. Their minimalist sound bridges continents, culminating in a 2023 world tour and a legendary Malawi homecoming. Intimate interviews and vibrant performances reveal music’s power to unite and transform.

18 April: The Latin Bridge - The second of our festival of Four World Music Concerts

The second in the series of ‘Our Music Planet’ Festival concerts is a celebration of the music from Latin America. We welcome The Latin Bridge on their first visit to Calstock Arts. It is a vocal and instrumental Latin/Cuban project that was formed in 2016 by the experienced Cuban musician Sergio Marciano Pereda. Joining Sergio (guitar/vocals) is Cristiano Rocha Assis (trumpet), Aldofredo Pulido (bass) and Yosmany González García (percussion). A dynamic and vibrant band that are always in a ‘Latin Key’, bringing the rich rhythms and soul of Latin music to life. Expect a swinging Saturday evening of traditional Cuban Folk, and from infectious dance grooves (Salsa, Bossa Nova, Rumba, Son..) to passionate Boleros ballads. “From intimate whispers to full-throttle rhythm, the band delivers a journey through sound that is both thrilling and heartfelt”. The diverse styles of Latin American music offer a musical journey through different cultures and histories, enriching the global music world with its vibrant rhythms and soulful melodies. Its roots can be traced back to the colonisation of the Americas by Spain, bringing with it European musical traditions. When blended with African rhythms and the indigenous musical heritage of the Americas, a unique and colourful music was created. In essence, the diversity, rhythm, and danceable nature of Latin music make it a much loved genre that transcends linguistic and cultural barriers.

Award-winning guitarist, Clive Carroll, is widely known for his unmistakable sound, compositions, and versatility. He has toured across five continents, bringing his signature blend of warmth and humour to breathtaking, genre-bending live performances. Carroll made his musical debut at age two as a banjo-strumming cowboy singing nursery rhymes, and went on to earn a 1st Class Honours Degree in Composition and Guitar from the famed Trinity College of Music in London. Upon graduation, he was taken on the road by the legendary “folk-baroque” pioneer, guitarist-composer John Renbourn, with whom he also collaborated over many years. He has also worked with guitar greats such as John Williams, D’Gary, Tommy Emmanuel, Xuefei Yang, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, and Ralph Towner. Carroll has released five solo albums to wide acclaim, and has composed music for film and television. He most recently performed ‘Pete Seeger’ banjo parts on the Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown”. 1 May: The Lipson Big Band @ 1930 (previously the Co-op Big Band)

Calstock Arts are delighted to welcome the Lipson Big Band (previously Co-operative Big Band) back for their annual performance. Formed in 2009 with a small group of students and private pupils by Pete Twyman. They are kindly performing as a fund raiser for themselves and Calstock Arts. The Lipson Big Band prides itself on being regards as a very professional & democratic youth big band. The band is tutored by professional musicians and consists of a mixture of students from Lipson Cooperative Academy and several other schools across the region. The band’s big break was being booked to play for the America’s Cup on Sky TV along such artists as Seth Lakeman. The addition of ex Royal Marine Bandsman, who play regularly with the band, has created an emulation model for the players. Now led by Gav Martin, currently a Teacher of music at Lipson Cooperative Academy and former WO1 Bandmaster Royal Marines Band Service, the band have performed at many prestigious events including the Theatre Royal Plymouth & Plymouth Pavilions and they have won Best Regional Big Band at the Saltash Music Festival for 5 consecutive years! They have an extensive repertoire of swing, funk, & soul music and have up to 30 members performing at some engagements.

8 May: Adrien Brandeis

ADRIEN BRANDEIS is a french jazz pianist and composer (Annecy, 1992) graduated from the conservatory of Paris. In 2017, he produced his first album “Euforia“, which had great recognition and international success. “Euforia” put Adrien Brandeis, in the spotlight of the Jazz scene, and led him to be awarded the prestigious Letter One Rising Stars Jazz Award 2018. In 2020, he wrote his second album “Meetings“, in quartet. It allows him to move towards a more modern and fresh sound. This album was selected by TSF Jazz Radio as Top 10 Best jazz albums in France. In 2022, he released in quartet “Siempre más allá” recorded in Mexico. It represents Adrien’s personal tribute to Mexico. In November 2022, he awarded the UNAC Grand Prize for New Jazz Talent 2022. After this fruitful experience, he returned to France at the beginning of 2024 and formed a band with the Guadeloupean drummer Arnaud Dolmen (featured on ‘Meetings’), joined by the Cuban (and Parisian) double bass player Felipe Cabrera and two of his compatriots on percussion: Abraham Mansfarroll or Yaroldy Abreu (depending on the track). It’s a quartet that adopts different instrumental formulas as the tracks progress (piano/percussion duo, piano/bass/drums trio or quintet with the two percussionists). In May 2025, he released his fourth album, “RESURGENCE”, marking his return to the French and European scene. A record that astonishes us with its musical maturity, scope, intensity and diversity.

A childhood growing up surrounded by the musical prowess of some of the 60’s most revered songwriters & musicians, not to mention being son of Roy Harper, along with 20 years of crafting songs & touring the land has spawned a truly one-off, original guitarist & songwriter who stands alone as a UK great, to be cherished & revered. Following a prolific creative chapter that has seen three studio releases since 2020, Nick returns to the setting of his father’s living room in a small flat in Kilburn, London in the mid 1960s ‘58 Fordwych Rd.‘. The flat was an after hours hang-out for the legends who played at Les Cousins in Soho at the height of the acoustic explosion in swingin’ sixties London. People like Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, John Renbourn, Paul Simon, Marc Bolan, Sandy Denny & others dropped in, to drop out, jam & try new tunes. But, all along, there was someone else there… a toddler, part of the family, inhaling the music & absorbing the vibe; Roy’s young son, Nick Harper. Many moons later, Nick invited these acoustic legends back into the room and toured this unique story to ecstatic receptions across the UK and Ireland.
