Growing Perennial Vegetables – The Future of Farming and Food

We’re excited for you to join us for a very special event at Birch Farm, of The Collective at Woolsery, marking the end of our first full year growing perennial vegetables at scale and developing them as a viable and delicious food source. At Birch Farm, we believe perennialfoods will play a crucial role in building resilient, biodiverse farming systems in the face of a changing climate. By integrating Food Forest principles and perennial growing systems into our existing market garden model—rooted in Natural Farming and agroforestry—we aim to inspire others to reimagine how we grow, cook, and eat. Why Attend? Over the past year (2025), we’ve been on a journey of discovery—experimenting with a wide range of perennial vegetables, collaborating with chefs, and learning firsthand about their potential in the field and the kitchen. This event is a chance to see the process in action, taste the results, and join a growing community of growers, chefs, and food lovers who are excited by the possibilities of perennial crops. What to Expect: Reflections from the Field: What worked, what didn’t, and what we’ve learned about growing perennials in a market garden setting. Tasting & Cooking Demos: Sample dishes prepared with perennial vegetables by our Head Chef Toby Neal, alongside Jack Feeny of No Mise en Plastic—showcasing new flavour profiles and cooking techniques.

April Introduction to Food Forests

Come spend an afternoon at Birch Farm with Head gardener Josh Sparkes from The Collective at Woolsery looking at the beauty and joy of Food Forest gardening. Food Forests play a vital role in Birch Farms approach to resilience and Natural Farming. Josh will discuss the ability they have to heal the landscape and make an edible system that allows us to cohabit with our wildlife. Josh will discuss the design, management and plant choice in depth and give advice on how you can start your own food will also be a chance to try different edible leaves, vegetables, fruits and nuts as we tour the farm, along with some Food Forest herbal teas. With your workshop confirmation you receive 5% off throughout The Collective at Woolsery on the day; join us for lunch at The Farmers Arms, pick up supplies at J Andrew Shop. We’re delighted to announce the return of the famous Yellow Welly Cobble Wobble: a challenging off-road run taking in the epic scenery and infamous hills of the Clovelly Estate – all to raise funds for Clovelly RNLI. You will cover around 12 miles of North Devon terrain, enjoying special access to the Estate and a chance to see areas that are normally closed off to the public. From gentle undulations through plantations and meandering woodland trails to challenging climbs and technical descents, the course promises an experience you’ll never forget. You will run through carpets of bluebells in the ancient woodland of Brownsham Woods, reaching dizzying elevations before negotiating the challenging pebbles at Mouth Mill Beach. You will climb from the high cliffs of the North Devon coastline to the clear waters of Clovelly Harbour, with stunning views of Lundy and Exmoor in the distance, before the calf-killing final challenge: a sprint finish up through the famous cobbled street. The run has won many fans locally thanks to a winning combination of beautiful scenery, ocean views, exclusive estate access, and some fun surprises. Entry is just £30, although we’d love it if runners took the opportunity to get sponsored on behalf of Clovelly RNLI. All funds raised go to support our vital work saving lives at sea.
