Broadsands sits right on the Devon coast where the sea air keeps everyone sane and the local shops do a brisk trade in ice creams. There are plenty of places to grab a coffee before heading out or finding a spot under the umbrellas for lunch. The town has always had a knack for turning a quiet afternoon into something properly entertaining without needing a single digital platform. People gather at the market stalls on a Saturday while others prefer the peace of a bookshop on a rainy Tuesday. It is easy to spend an entire day wandering from one friendly face to another without ever feeling rushed or bored. Head of the Dart- SUP Challenge

The Head of the Dart SUP Challenge is an annual event in April and sees more than 250 paddlers taking part, making it the largest SUP event in the UK. Each year, paddlers come together to complete the 14km course along the River Dart taking in the beautiful Devon countryside running between the historic town of Dartmouth and Totnes, alternating directions every year. It is traditionally seen as the season opener, with paddlers travelling from all of the country, and further afield! Paddlers have the option to take part in the challenge either as part of the race or leisure fleet. Prizes are awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the race fleets, with a raffle (made up with donations from our sponsors) available for those taking part in the leisure fleet. All participants collect a finishers medal at the end and timings published on our website. The event is seen as a “must do” and regularly sells out within minutes! Due to the good old British weather, paddlers can be faced with conditions from sunshine and rain to wind. As a result, we take the safety of everyone very seriously and work with the local rowing clubs to ensure safety boats are provided along the route. Contingency plans are also in place should conditions be unsuitable, meaning alternative course routes are used.

Talk- Vernon MacAndrew: From the Dart to the Red Sea

Vernon MacAndrew’s life extended far beyond Dartmouth. During the 1920s he undertook a series of remarkable expeditions, travelling widely in search of shells and natural history specimens. His journeys took him to Egypt, the Red Sea and the Philippines, where he built up a significant shell collection later bequeathed to the Natural History Museum. These travels also produced a remarkable body of photographs, many in early colour, documenting people, landscapes and wildlife across several continents. In 1939 MacAndrew embarked on a very different voyage — a naval reconnaissance mission in the Atlantic involving Madeira and the islands of Macaronesia, undertaken with retired Admirals in the tense months before the outbreak of war. This illustrated talk by Jonathan Turner explores these expeditions, combining adventure, science and geopolitics.
