What's on in Broadlands

Devon, England

Broadlands sits quietly in Devon with a charm that refuses to be rushed into silence. With no big venues listed yet, the local scene relies on community spirit and word of mouth to keep things lively. It is a place where neighbours know each other's names and the pub quiz probably happens every Tuesday without needing an invite. The town grows its own events from the soil up, so you can expect fresh ideas whenever you pop in for a stroll. Even if there are no famous halls right now, the local character ensures there is plenty to do without needing a brochure. It is exactly the sort of spot that makes life feel a little less ordinary and a whole lot more friendly.

Shakespeare - At Home and Abroad

We’re excited to welcome two of our patrons to The Gallery on Thursday 7th May for a special fund-raising event at Paradiso—a lively conversation between historian Ian Mortimer and diaspora performance-maker Patrice Naiambana . Generously giving their time, together they will explore Shakespeare across time, culture and lived experience. Ian Mortimer will look at Shakespeare through the social and cultural world of early modern England, revealing the context that shaped the plays. In response, Patrice Naiambana will reflect and perform, engaging with Shakespeare as an African artist who works internationally and reimagines the canon through diaspora perspectives, embodied practice, and cross-cultural storytelling. Together, they consider how Shakespeare “travels”—how meaning changes between home and abroad, and how history, identity, and performance continuously reshape his work for new audiences. A rich conversation for anyone interested in Shakespeare not as a fixed monument, but as a living, global experience. Tickets are priced at £12 each + booking fee. Please note tickets are non-refundable. CLICK HERE TO BOOK TICKETS FOR THIS EVENT. Drinks (licensed bar) and light snacks will be available to purchase. Doors will and the performance will be an interval and an opportunity for discussion. We recommend that you park at the Mary Street car park, a short 5 minute walk and free after 6pm. Reel Earth - Six Inches of Soil

For our third Reel Earth event : A season of films about climate and nature - and in partnership with Climate Action Bovey Heathfield and First Draft Books, we are delighted to bring "Six Inches of Soil" to Paradiso. The inspiring story of British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food - to heal the soil, benefit our health and provide for local communities. Agroecology is an approach to farming that includes ‘regenerative’ farming techniques that work in harmony with, rather than against nature. It focuses on local food systems and shorter supply chains. The advantages are numerous: we get to know who is growing our food and how, farmers get paid a fair price and have the satisfaction of producing healthy food in a healthy environment.  Agroecology may also be our best chance in the face of climate change: it keeps carbon in the ground and creates resilient systems in the face of climate uncertainty. Six Inches of Soil is a story of courage, vision and hope. Director: Colin Ramsay Running Time: 97 mins Book now and don't miss out on this exclusive event!
