Walk the Ethels: Back Tor & Lost Lad

In celebration of Ethel Haythornthwaite and 100 years of CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire, we are leading guided walks up the many Ethels on land cared for by the National Trust. The Ethels are 95 hills in the Peak District named in tribute to Ethel Haythornthwaite, who founded CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire in 1924 (then called the Sheffield Association for the Protection of Rural Scenery.) Her activism saved Longshaw Estate from development and helped establish the Peak District as the UK’s first National Park in 1951. Join us on a circular walk summiting Back Tor and Lost Lad from Fairholmes Visitor Centre. The walk begins in the shadow of the famous Derwent Dam before a steep ascent onto Green Sitches and on to Lost Lad, which offers stunning views of Derwent Valley and Derwent Moor. We'll then continue to Back Tor and follow Derwent Edge until we descend to Ladybower Reservoir and follow the shoreline back to the car park. This moderately challenging walk is approximately 8 miles and includes a steep ascent and follows an uneven footpath. The walk is not suitable for pushchairs or prams. Dogs on leads are welcome but there may be some stiles. Our walk leaders are incredibly knowledgeable, so please ask as many questions about the area as you like!

We recommend that if you have a long distance to travel, you arrive the day prior to a Pilgrimage at suitable local accommodation so as to have a good night’s rest before climbing the mountain on the following day. We strongly suggest having a good breakfast and drinking plenty of fluids before climbing. You should be well prepared for sudden changes in the weather – wear mountain boots, and carry both warm and waterproof clothing. Suitable headgear, sunblock, insect repellent, energy bars and water are all basic essentials but requirements will vary depending on the mountain and weather conditions.

Summer Walks – Longshaw Estate

Our walk leaders are heading out to Longshaw Estate this month, A circular walk from the estate, visiting a wildlife meadow, pond & ancient woodland of Padley Gorge. Good Paths with a short section of steep paths. Times (All timings are approximate, depending on the walk route and location): 10:00 – pick up at NMVC 10:30 – 12:30 – walk 12:30 – 13:30 – Lunch at community or suitable outdoor space 13:30 – transport back to NMVC Registration: To join the walks, you must sign up in advance, using the registration form and book a space on each individual walk. What to bring: Be prepared for the weather and terrain – suitable footwear, waterproofs or sunhats and sunscreen or both! Drink for the walk and a packed lunch. Any medication, like inhalers, that you might need on the walk If you would like to come places are limited so get in touch to book a place.
