Join Richmond Orchestra at the Landmark for a programme of Russian satire, fantasy and musical brilliance. Le Coq d’Or, Rimsky-Korsakov’s last opera, poked fun at the Russian ruling classes through a fairy-tale. The suite from the opera arranged by Rimsky’s pupil Glazunov contains some of the most beguiling music ever written by the past master of orchestral colour. The film Lieutenant Kijé is the tale of a man who exists only as a fictitious set of records, another satire on governmental incompetence; Prokofiev’s soundtrack, which he later fashioned into a concert suite, contains some of his most memorable music, including the famous Troika. Our main work is Mussorgsky’s monumental suite Pictures at an Exhibition, in which the composer makes a journey in sound through the artworks of his friend Victor Hartmann. Originally for piano, it was gloriously reimagined by Maurice Ravel into an orchestral showpiece like no other. Prepare to be dazzled and delighted.
