“A fabulous course for a complete beginner like me to get hands-on experience of hand, natural dyeing” Jessica Join dye expert Jenny Mercer for a day discovering the world of natural dyeing using winter plants we find all around us, including barks and foraged materials. This hands-on workshop takes you through the full process—from exploring seasonal dye plants and seeds, to extraction and dyeing – as well exploring some of the fascinating history of natural dyeing traditions along the way. Although we will discuss dyeing a range of fabrics, we will especially concentrate on the material of cotton, and other cellulose fibres. At the end of the course you will take home a pair of cotton socks that you have dyed yourself using a range of beautiful, natural colours extracted during the workshop. Plus you’ll leave equipped with the skills, knowledge, and inspiration to carry on your dyeing journey—and a deeper appreciation for this ancient art. Plan of the Day: Enjoy refreshments as Jenny introduces you to the vibrant world of natural dyeing. She’ll share a brief history and walk you through the dyeing process—from plant selection to extraction techniques. You’ll explore a variety of dye plants and work together to extract their natural colours. As the dye pots simmer, you’ll prepare the wool using mordants, essential for bonding dye to fabric.

Fused Bowls and Vases with Jazz Dixon

@ Standard Price Immerse yourself in the beauty of summer blooms and use them as your inspiration to create a unique statement glass piece for your home, whether you decide to make a large bowl, platter or vase. You will be welcomed with refreshments before spending the first part of the morning walking around the beautiful flower fields observing and drawing some of the amazing flowers. This part of the day will help develop your ideas for your own glass piece. Time will then be spent creating some simple guided sketches, taking time to observe the shape and colours of the flowers. Jazz will then give you a brief talk and introduction to fused glass and the range of materials available before moving on to designing your own unique statement glass piece. This can be a square platter 30cm x 30cm, a glass bowl 30cm diameter, or a glass vase approximately 25cm tall. Jazz will guide you through the practicalities of the design process and show you how to incorporate the ideas from your sketches. After breaking for lunch (please bring a packed lunch with you), you will create your design using a wide range of coloured accessory glass, all under Jazz’s expert guidance. Your finished design will be taken away and fired. It will be available for collection from West Sussex or East Sussex, or we can arrange for your piece to be posted to you in approx. 3 weeks.
