Peter Hitchens, 74, has been a columnist for The Mail on Sunday for more than 20 years and also writes for the Daily Mail. A former Marxist-Leninist, he is now a social conservative and Anglican Christian. He has lived, as a correspondent, in Moscow and Washington, and has in his career covered education, politics, labour and industry, defence and diplomacy. He reckons he has reported from 57 countries (some of which no longer exist), including North Korea, Burma, China, India, The Democratic Republic of The Congo, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Egypt, Iraq and Iran. He is the author of nine books and is now engaged on a tenth. Peter tweets as 'ClarkeMicah' the name being taken from Micah Clarke, an historical novel by Arthur Conan Doyle which begins in Havant. His father's side of the family come from Portsmouth, and he lived as a child in Chichester, Funtington, Havant and Alverstoke. Peter's grandfather was a council schoolteacher in Portsmouth, his father a naval officer and his aunt distinguished and much-loved nurse living and working in Hampshire. Peter now lives in Oxford and is married and has three children.
