Seascraper by Benjamin Wood, winner of the Nero Book Awards 2025, tells the story of Thomas who lives a physically demanding life with his mother in Longferry, working his grandfather’s trade as a shanker. At heart, he is a folk musician, but that remains a private dream until a striking visitor arrives, bringing the promise of Hollywood glamour, Thomas begins to see a different future but how much of what the American claims is true? This novel tells of a young man hemmed in by his circumstances, striving to achieve fulfilment far beyond the world he knows.
