Hampstead Heath, London Enter Kai Ohlsen’s world of painting, he works very loosely and expressively, with a philosophy of self-abandon that drives this approach. This inspiring opportunity to work en plein air in the gorgeous rugged surroundings of Hampstead Heath, tutored by a self taught successful practicing artist. Kohlsen’s process is centred around the idea of taking the decision making mind out of the equation of making a painting. Working with haste helps this, but this is also why he loves working en plein air so much; when you’re outdoors, wind blowing, forgot to bring paper towels and there’s an angry farmer shouting at you, there’s no sense in striving for perfection, it’s getting out there and the act of doing that matters. This invigorating course will focus on encouraging students to embrace the idea that anything they make will be a worthwhile endeavour and therefore they can’t fail. Students will be encouraged to let loose in a total frenzy and whimsical flurry of mark making, without being attached to aspirations of representational painting. The end result, simply by virtue of getting out and making something, becomes an artefact of the effort and the love which has been used to make the paintings.
