Video: Newport and Carisbrooke from above We Are Your Council About the Council For 34-years the Newport area was without its own council, after local government reorganisation abolished the historic Newport Borough in 1974. However, in 2006 when the Isle of Wight Council declared its intention to levy a local precept in Newport for parish type works, several local people set about seeking the emparishment of the town area. Sufficient petition signatures to emparish the entire area was acquired from residents by August 2006, which the Isle of Wight Council then submitted to Government with their support. In November 2007, the Government announced its agreement and Newport Parish Council (now known as Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council) was established from April 2008, with elections one month later. It was created in 2008 to provide local services that would no longer be provided by the Isle of Wight Council within the parish area, e.g., Christmas lights, hanging baskets and dog bins. Since 2010 it has increasingly taken on extra services that the Isle of Wight Council has decided it can no longer afford to provide, e.g., allotments, public toilets, maintenance of open spaces and recreation grounds, Environment Officer, and road crossing patrols. The parish has councillors elected by the residents every four years. Your parish councillors are here to help and to represent you.
