As you reach the ground floor of Buckland Abbey, you may smell an open fire and something cooking! Our volunteer historical cooking team will be whipping up a spread. This event is a living history display that brings the Abbey to life. The food will not be available for visitors to eat but we will provide recipe cards for you to take away and may be able to assist with some simple tasks such as grinding spices. The event is free, normal admission to the Abbey applies. Sessions Include: - April - What would Tudor sailors eat? - May - Tudor seasonal foods - June - Great Big Green Week: Food Through the Ages - July 10th - 1950s - July and August - Seafaring - October - Seafaring The historical cooking team will also be in the kitchen on 20th March doing a bread and butter talk. Also they shall be back on 19th September for a herbs and spices talk.

May Half Term - Historic Food Trail

Pick up a trail booklet and a pencil from visitor welcome and learn about the historic food that was grown on the estate through the years. In the garden you will find lawn games. Why not challenge your friends and family to a game of bowling, croquet or cornhole? Inside the abbey, you will find a food spotters trail. The trail is free of charge, normal admission applies. Please note, in the event of high winds, the Estate Walks at Buckland Abbey may be closed, including the trail route. The garden games on the lawn will remain accessible in these instances.

Monastic Buckland: A Guided Tour

Join us for an introductory talk and guided walk to discover why a group of 13th century monks left their monastery on the Isle of Wight and travelled to Devon to set up an Abbey tour lasts for approximately 1.5 hours and takes you around the buildings of Buckland to look at the architecture and stonework. Through this you will be able to build up a picture of how the Abbey might have looked in Medieval terms. This tour takes place on the first Thursday of every month.

Armada Maps at Buckland Abbey

Experience the history and artistry of the Armada Maps in a limited exhibition in Buckland Abbey's Nave Gallery. On display in the West Country for the first time, the unique Elizabethan maps will be displayed in the former home of Sir Francis Drake, one of the key figures in the resistance against the Spanish Armada in 1588. The maps were also the source material for the mid-century murals in the Nave Gallery by artist Roland Pym, which will be on display together for the first time. Normal admission to Buckland Abbey applies.
