Event description: The stylish villa of Townhill Park House was created in the 18th century for the Middleton family. Nathanial Middleton had retired from the East India Company after making a fortune in India, collecting a vast array of Persian Art and having a family with his Indian mistress. His mixed-race wife inherited her fortune from her father's Jamaican plantation. What followed next was a National scandal, a trial that dominated the tabloids, bankruptcies , elopements and mental collapse. This talk will cover the rise and fall of the Middleton's of Townhill Park House Speaker: Dr Cheryl Butler is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Hon Fellow of the University of Winchester, on the editorial board of the Southampton Records Series, and of the Hampshire Papers. Her most recent publications include two volumes for the Records Series, a paper on the Journal of John Sturdy for Hampshire Papers and First Impressions: Jane Austen's Southampton Circle 1780-1820 available from http://www.hobnobpress.co.uk. Winchester College Archives and Treasures Tour

The Winchester School hour long archive tour will starting at 2pm allows a rare opportunity to view two medieval rooms which house the school’s archives, as well as documents and artefacts relating to the school’s history which will be on display. We will be able to explore the treasures of Winchester College’s collections, including works of art and rare books that are not normally on public display. This will be followed by an opportunity to explore the College’s original museum and art gallery and part of the Fellows’ Library where there is a changing display of rare books and manuscripts, prints, and drawings. The Tour will end from 4 to 4.30pm. There are no refreshment facilities on site, but there are local pubs and cafes nearby. Please let me know if you would be interested in having a social catch up with the other members afterwards when booking and once I have an idea of numbers I can book a nearly location and will let you know. Access: Due to the historic nature of the site, some areas are unfortunately inaccessible to those with mobility restrictions. In particular, the two rooms visited on the Archives tour are both accessed via steep, stone spiral staircases of 36 and 52 steps each, with no handrails. One of the 3-4 rooms visited on the Treasures tours is also reached via multiple flights of stairs. However, the rest of the Treasures tour is on ground level and / or wheelchair accessible.
