The Loose Goose: A Roving Laboratory of Radical Imagination Every year at Guid Nychburris we celebrate the historic boundaries of Dumfries – riding the marches and honouring the traditions that mark where the town begins and ends. But this year…one goose has slipped the gate. The Loose Goose is a roaming cargo bike turned mobile imagination laboratory – part pirate radio station, part musical playground, part pop-up print studio. You might hear it before you see it! Stop by and you might find yourself: Playing with strange sound gadgets and musical instruments Screen-printing a rebellious goose to take home. Sharing thoughts about the kind of place Dumfries could become Because while Guid Nychburris celebrates the boundaries of the town, the Loose Goose asks a playful question: What good ideas might be waiting just outside the gate? Inspired by the wild geese that cross continents without borders, the Loose Goose celebrates radical welcome, freedom of imagination, and the brilliant mix of cultures, voices and possibilities that shape a town. Newcomers, locals, dreamers, wanderers – everyone is welcome to join in. Let your imagination soar.

Welcome to our June WRITE meet-up! Join us at this monthly creative writing workshop with author Karl Drinkwater. WRITE! is all about letting your imagination guide your hand. In each session we’ll chat about a writing-related topic, then provide prompts and a theme, and the opportunity to write based on the inspiration. It might be a character sketch, or a piece of description or dialogue. The key thing is that it will be your words, and they’d never have been born if you’d stayed at home that night. Sessions are expertly guided by thought-provoking prompts, offering dedicated time for free-flowing expression. Afterward, participants have the opportunity to share their creations within supportive groups, receiving valuable tips to enhance their writing skills and boost confidence. Whether you’re rediscovering the joy of the creative process or seeking inspiration for your existing project, Write fosters a collaborative and experimental environment. Fuel your next big project with the friendly encouragement and creative energy that defines Write.Open to: everyone! It doesn’t matter whether you’ve never written anything before, or if you’re an established author looking for a brief shot of espresso creativity. Reel to Real: We are Making a Film about Mark Fisher

This month we share an experimental film by artists Sophie Mellor and Simon Poulter (collaborating as Close and Remote) about the late theorist Mark Fisher, blending documentary, performance and new music. Doors open at 5:30pm, film starts at 7pm About the Film We Are Making A Film About Mark Fisher is a 65-minute cinematic experiment exploring the continuing relevance of the late theorist’s ideas on capitalism, culture, and the future. Directed by Simon Poulter and Sophie Mellor (collaborating as Close and Remote) the film was made in 2024-2025 using ) as a methodological tool to find collaborators, generate research and disseminate content. With over 70 invited contributors listed the film blends documentary, performance, new music, and hauntological fiction. The main narrative follows Parkins – a time-slipped character – through ghostly landscapes and digital spaces, tracing Fisher’s thoughts from the 1990s to our algorithmic present. A second narrative emerges from interviews conducted with theorists, journalists, and artists whose life and work have been influenced by him. The film embodies Fisher’s call for collective imagination beyond capitalist realism. It ends in the room with a discussion about agency and what we can do next. The film tours across Italy beginning 19 February 2026, with screenings and Q&A events at a variety of locations.
