Lunchtime Lecture Humfrey Wanley FSA & his Book of Specimens: A Tercentenary Lecture by David Ganz FSA and Julian Munby FSA The rediscovery of Humfrey Wanley’s Book of Specimens in the library at Longleat House by Simon Keynes FSA makes it possible to evaluate the superb copies of manuscripts made by Wanley which it contains and Wanley’s contribution to dating them. Between 1697 and 1699 Wanley made copies of Greek and Latin manuscripts in England and of manuscripts with Old English glosses. He was particularly interested in dated and datable manuscripts, and he was to write a letter on judging the age of manuscripts. This lecture will trace Wanley’s interest in making copies of script, his work at Oxford, Cambridge and London, the identification of those manuscripts which he included in the Book of Specimens, and the fate of the Book after he decided to sell it. The Book shows just how accomplished a palaeographer Wanley was. David Ganz FSA was Professor of Palaeography at Kings College London and has taught it at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He is an elected member of the Comité interantionale de paléographie latine. This event will be both in person at Burlington House and online.
