Monday - Friday 6th April 2026 - 18th September 2026 Visitors to the Roman Army Museum are welcome to visit the excavation area Monday-Friday 10am-12noon, 1pm-2:30pm & 3pm-4pm to see the team uncovering history. Suitable footwear for walking through a field recommended. The Magna excavations are part of a 5 year project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and will continue until 2027. This years excavations are exploring the praetorium (commanding officers house) inside the last fort at Magna where they will spend the next two years. 2026 Vindolanda Excavations

Monday - Friday 30th March - 3rd July 2026 Excavation Break Monday - Friday 3rd August - 25th September 2026 The excavations continue at Vindolanda Roman Fort to uncover the north-eastern quadrant of the fort. The archaeologists and their teams of volunteers will be out Mon - Fri weather permitting. This year's excavations continue the research project for 2024 - 2028 at Roman Vindolanda called Castrum, Latin for Fort. The project focuses on the last remaining turfed area within the boundaries of the last stone fort at Vindolanda: the north-eastern quadrant and a section of the eastern ditch, immediately beyond the fort walls. Another focus is bringing together evidence from excavations spanning two centuries. The north-eastern quadrant has been partially explored before by Anthony Hedley in the 1830’s, Eric, Patricia and Robin Birley ...

Roman Pottery Residential

We are thrilled to announce another special opportunity for hands-on our pottery expert Dr Cristina Crizbasan for a 5 day residential workshop with 4 places for staying on site at the Hedley Centre and an extra 2 places unaccommodated, working in our Excavation facility, the Robin Birley Archaeological Centre. This course will run from Monday 6th to Friday 10th July 2026. The course includes lunch in our cafe Mon-Fri. Each day of the course will delve into a different aspect of pottery analysis: Day 1: Will include an introduction to the site and museum, as well as the theoretical role of pottery as archaeological data. Day 2 - 4: Participants will learn to recognise pottery forms and fabrics and to reconstruct vessel profiles through drawing. Day 5: Participants will get to apply all your new knowledge to work on a genuine Roman pottery assemblage from Vindolanda’s recent excavations. Have-a-go Archery

Thursdays 23rd & 30th July and 6th, 13th, 20th & 27th August 2026, 11am – 4pm Join us to practice your archery skills overlooking the ancient Roman Fort of Magna at this family-friendly event. Aim for the high score on the target as you have a go at shooting a bow and arrow. Can you be as accurate as the Roman soldiers would have been? Magna Fort, at the site of the Roman Army Museum, was home to a cohort of Hamian archers arriving in Britannia from Syria. Colour in your own Hamian archer as you learn more about the diverse cohorts who were stationed on Hadrian’s Wall and the evidence we have for them. Make sure to check out our blog to learn more about the Hamian archers! (This event will use child-friendly sucker arrows and is open to all ages).
