Adults: £12.00 Children (Ages 3 – 18): £5.00 Meet the Performers Stuart Duncan Stuart is a London-based freelance musician and sound engineer with expertise in guitar, keyboard, and synthesizer. After graduating with a Bachelor of Music from the University of the Highlands and Islands, he has performed in function bands, musical theatre productions, and festivals across Scotland, England, India, and Italy. Stuart’s extensive experience covers live performance, studio recording, and audio engineering for a range of musical settings. Alongside his freelance work, he volunteers at the Musical Museum in Kew, supporting events and preserving the tradition of live music in the community. Follow Stuart: Instagram Joy Boole Joy is a contemporary classical clarinetist and composer celebrated for her innovative blend of acoustic clarinet and electronic effects.

Vaughan Williams: Piano Quintet in C minor Schubert: Piano Quintet in A major D. 667 “The Trout” This programme pairs the Piano Quintet in C minor by Ralph Vaughan Williams with the Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667 (“Trout”) by Franz Schubert, offering a focused exploration of how composers have reimagined the piano quintet across time. Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet (1819) is notable for its unusual scoring, replacing the second violin with double bass. This creates a lighter, more transparent texture and allows the piano to function as an equal partner rather than a dominant voice. The famous variation movement on his song Die Forelle reflects Schubert’s gift for lyricism and clarity of form. Vaughan Williams’ Piano Quintet (1903) adopts the same instrumentation but produces a markedly different sound world. Richer and more expansive in texture, it reflects his early engagement with late Romantic style alongside emerging traits of his mature voice, including modal harmony and broad, song-like themes. Together, these works highlight both continuity and contrast: a shared interest in instrumental balance, but distinct approaches to texture, form, and pastoral expression. Schubert’s music evokes lightness and movement, while Vaughan Williams offers a more reflective and spacious soundscape. Heard side by side, they present the piano quintet as a flexible and evolving genre.

Marmalade and Masquerades - Live Performance with Narration

Marmalade and Masquerades André Caplet: Conte Fantastique (1922) after Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death, for harp, narrator and string quartet. Story adapted by Erin Muldoon. Herbert Chappell: Paddington’s First Concert (mid-1970s), arranged for the same ensemble by Roger Montgomery. Travel from the familiar warmth of 32, Windsor Gardens, home to London’s favourite bear, into the shadowy world of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. This imaginative programme brings together two contrasting tales, showing how music can express both light and dark, comfort and mystery. Through engaging live performance with narration, children and families will discover how composers use sound to tell stories. Some feel cosy, playful, and curious. Others are dramatic, eerie and full of suspense. Each invites listeners to picture characters, places and emotions in their own way. On one side, Paddington Bear’s world is brought to life through music that celebrates kindness, humour and small everyday adventures. On the other hand, André Caplet’s Conte Fantastique draws us into a darker, more mysterious atmosphere, inspired by Poe’s haunting tale of Prince Prospero’s abbey. Placed side by side, these works reveal how music can spark imagination across very different moods and stories.
