24 October: Explore the range of different techniques that can be performed on a rigid-heddle loom. This course ideal both for beginners and those who are familiar with rigid heddle looms who would like to learn some more complicated techniques, such as textured weaving. Rigid heddle looms are a good choice for new weavers as setting up is straight forward and new ones are relatively inexpensive. A four shaft loom will be used to explain the name “Rigid Heddle” and show a few of the patterns that can be woven on it. Those new to weaving will spend time on a loom set up for balanced weave (the type used for fabrics) and weaving on a loom threaded at about 4 threads an inch. These threads, which are the warp, will be completely covered by the weft. Those looking to try more advance techniques can insert a stick at the back of the loom, allowing you to weave a number of patterns by going over three threads and under one as well as going over one and under three. You can form patterns by twisting the warp. The tutor for this course is Angela Pawlyn. Angela is a member of both the Oxford and Kennet Valley Guilds of Weavers Spinners and Dyers. She has nearly fifty years of weaving experience and enjoys teaching the craft. We keep class sizes small to allow you plenty of time with the course tutor. This course takes place on 24 October, 10am-4pm. There will be a short break for lunch and tea/coffee is provided.
