Introduction to Corn Dolly Crafting

Course Overview In this introductory workshop you will learn the traditional craft of corn dolly making, a heritage skill rooted in the rhythms of the harvest and practiced across Britain and Europe for hundreds, even thousands of years. You will explore how these beautiful woven forms were traditionally created from the final sheaf of the harvest, believed to hold the spirit of the crop through the winter and ensure fertility and a successful harvest the following year. Your workshop will begin with an introduction to the history, cultural significance and regional variations of corn dollies, before moving on to practical instruction. Guided by course leader Beckie Pallitt of Windhover Crafts, you will learn the foundational techniques needed to create your own corn dolly inspired by traditional forms. Throughout the workshop, you will be supported step-by-step, developing skills in handling and preparing the straw, shaping, and binding. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with an endangered rural craft and gain insight into traditions that have been passed down through generations. By the end of the course, you will take home your own handcrafted corn dollys along with the knowledge to continue practicing this rewarding skill. The course itself takes place in and around the purpose built oak framed craft barn at Stanwick Lakes which is managed by Rockingham Forest Trust as an environmental charity.
