Non Steaming Days

Crofton Beam Engines on a non steaming day offers a unique and equally enriching experience. The tranquillity of the setting, combined with the historical significance and intricate mechanics of the beam engines, provides a captivating journey through time. On non steaming days, visitors have the opportunity to admire the beam engines in a state of serene dormancy. The polished brass and iron components glisten under the gentle light, revealing the meticulous care taken to preserve these mechanical marvels. One of the highlights of visiting Crofton on a non steaming day is the availability of our knowledgeable volunteers who can help explain to visitors the history and functionality of the beam engines. They offer a wealth of information, from the engineering principles behind the engines to the stories of the people who operated and maintained them. On Non Steaming Days, visitors are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy overlooking the canal and railway. Site & Engine House open 10:30 Engine House close 15:00 Site close 16:00

Crofton Beam Engines Tuesday Work Days

Crofton workdays are every Tuesday throughout the year except the 22 and 29 December 2026. Members of the public are welcome to visit us and see volunteers maintaining and repairing everything from our boiler to the grounds. Our knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to guide you round the site. Free entry to the Beam Engines, suggested donations of £5 per head would be welcome since looking after Crofton is an expensive business! Car Park Charges Apply : £1.50 up to 2 hours, £3.00 all day (until 14.30) Visitors are also welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy in the grounds overlooking the canal and railway. Please note that the only access to the site is via the main gate opposite the car park. No access from the lower canal entrance at lock 60. The gate is locked. The pay and display car park will be open on Tuesday Works Open Days. For more details please visit the website at https://www.croftonbeamengines.org/events/
