Rainy Day Picks This Weekend

27–28 June Near London

Not every listing gets a golden ticket

We check the usual frankly silly number of local websites, then look for events that feel rainy-day friendly: cinemas, theatres, talks, workshops, galleries, concerts, cosy venues, and anything less likely to involve standing in a muddy field making brave weather noises.

Happening Saturday 27 June to Sunday 28 June.
Picked for London, not somewhere halfway across the county.
Only Local Gems and Curated venues make the cut, because standards are still a thing.
Listings with proper descriptions get bumped up the list. Three words and a shrug will not do.

Khan on Saturday, June 27. This conversation will take place within the exhibition space, where Tajima’s luminescent body of work 24 Hour Cosmos, as well as other recent series, will inspire a wide-ranging discussion on art and technology. Activating theoretical approaches in her process-based practice, Tajima engages new methods of abstraction to explore the realm of networked information, sociality, and the self.Currently serving as Faculty in Creative Technologies at UCSC, Khan writes on philosophy of AI and emerging technologies. Formally, this work attempts to theorize the limits of algorithmic knowledge and locate computation’s influence on critical language. The conversation will be followed by the exhibition’s public opening reception from 5 to 7 PM. Beyond Echo

at Close-Up Cinema

Beyond Echo: Guy Sherwin , Tansy Spinks , Kerry Baldry , Lynn Loo and Zeljko Vukicevic ( Zhel ) Curated by Kerry Baldry and Zeljko Vukicevic ( Zhel ), films and performances in this programme unfold in dialogue with one another, allowing unexpected connections and interpretations to emerge through sequencing, overlap, and re-viewing. Rather than presenting fixed or finished forms, the works remain open and responsive, shaped by their surroundings and by the experience of the audience. Live sound performances will respond directly to projected images at selected moments during the screening, creating a programme that continually evolves through its presentation. Together, the works explore moving image and sound as active, unstable material – capable of drifting, transforming, and being encountered anew.

The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant

at Close-Up Cinema

The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant Rainer Werner Fassbinder , 1972, 124 min In the early 1970s, Rainer Werner Fassbinder discovered the American melodramas of Douglas Sirk and was inspired by them to begin working in a new, more intensely emotional register. One of the first and best-loved films of this period in his career is The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant , which balances a realistic depiction of tormented romance with staging that remains true to the director’s roots in experimental theatre. This unforgettable, unforgiving dissection of the imbalanced relationship between a haughty fashion designer ( Margit Carstensen ) and a beautiful but icy ingenue ( Hanna Schygulla ) – based, in a sly gender reversal, on the writer-director’s own desperate obsession with a young actor – is a true Fassbinder affair, featuring exquisitely claustrophobic cinematography by Michael Ballhaus and full-throttle performances by an all-female cast. Goodbye, Dragon Inn

at Close-Up Cinema

Goodbye, Dragon Inn Tsai Ming-liang , 2003, 81 min “In Taipei City, a cavernous old picture palace is about to close its doors forever. A meagre audience, the remaining few staff, and perhaps even a ghost or two, watch King Hu 's wuxia classic Dragon Inn – each haunted by memories and desires evoked by cinema itself. An exquisite, wryly funny and tender tribute to the experience of movie-going, Tsai Ming-Liang 's poignant love letter to cinema is one of the most beguiling and beloved dramas of modern times and is now widely regarded as a classic.” – Second Run Screening as part of our Histoire(s) du cinéma series

Blood

at Close-Up Cinema

Blood Pedro Costa , 1989, 95 min “Few filmmakers can boast a body of work as audacious, beautiful or challenging as that of Pedro Costa . Filmed in startling monochrome and demonstrating a love and knowledge of classical Hollywood and European art cinema, Blood is a lushly stylized romantic fable. It explores the plight of two brothers coming to terms with the death of their father and the legacy of violence and debt he has left behind. Languid and unsettling, beautiful and intimate, with echoes of Tourneur , Bresson , Ray and Straub-Huillet , Blood is both elusive and utterly mesmerising.” – Second Run Screening as part of our Histoire(s) du cinéma series

Exhibition : Tony Oxley – Combination.7

Exhibition : Tony Oxley – Combination.

at Hundred Years Gallery

TONY OXLEY (1938 – 2023) is admired the world over as an extremely influential improvising drummer, band leader and educator. In addition to his drumming legacy, Oxley was also a prolific and very accomplished abstract-figurative painter. Visual art was an essential part of Tony’s personality, another way in which he was able to reveal his inner self and connect with the wider realm. Initially encouraged to start painting by his musical collaborator and friend, renowned Scottish artist Alan Davie (the influence of which is very apparent in Oxley’s early works from the 1970s), Tony navigated his way visually across five decades, working his way through many different styles, stages and approaches.
