‘Harvington Hall: The House of Secrets’ Jo Durrant in conversation with Phil Downing

Can you imagine having to hide in a tiny space, cleverly concealed in the fabric of a building, and not knowing when you’d get to escape? That’s what a number of Catholic priests in Elizabethan England did, as it was illegal for them to set foot in the country from 1585. The consequences of being found by a priest hunter were often harrowing. Harvington Hall in Kidderminster has the UK’s finest collection of priest hides, including under the stairs and above a bread oven. Manager Phil Downing has spent years researching these hiding places, and has also spent time locked inside them! He joins Jo Durrant to reveal some surprising stories from the building known as the house of secrets. Book online here or . Beauties & Beasts of the KRUGER NATIONAL PARK – An Illustrated Talk by Elisa Best

Kruger National Park's is one of Africa’s largest game reserves, but its rich natural heritage is under threat. Through her charity work, Bristol vet and conservationist Elisa Best has been in the forefront of efforts to protect the park's wildlife. In this fascinating talk, she explores the challenges facing the park the work being done to protect its wildlife, drawing on her own firsthand experience supporting anti-poaching initiatives. This is a Pay As You Feel Event, and proceeds will be shared with Elisa's animal charity Blankets for Baby Rhinos. Drinks and snacks available at the bar. Walk and Talk - Bats

Join us in September to hunt for bats on a unique guided night walk through the arboretum. This informative walk will begin in our handcrafted roundhouse as your guides offer introduction to the characteristics of the different bat species who make their home here. You will then explore the arboretum on a leisurely paced walk, armed with bat detectors so you can ‘hear’ and track any bat activity. By September bats have finished raising their young and are starting to think about mating. Many of our bat species also start travelling to swarming sites (areas where lots of bats from a wide meet up to mate) at this time of year, making it a great time to head outside in search of them! After the walk we will gather around the fire for hot beverages before departing. There are limited numbers available, so please do book early to avoid disappointment! Knowledge required: Perfect for beginners! Group size: 15 maximum. Minimum age: We think this event might be most suited for those age 10+. However you know your child best, if you think they’re able to be calm and quiet during the walk then they’re welcome to join at any age. Join our Collection Manager, Jake, for a few hours of happy rambling, learning about the mushrooms that grow right on our doorstep. The walk will begin with a brief introduction to the arboretum and safety talk before venturing out together. Identifying mushrooms is a complicated but fascinating process. Jake will take you through some of the key features to look for, including how to recognise plant habitats and which specimens to avoid. This is an opportunity to touch, smell and learn, take photos and videos, make notes and take away a wealth of information. This is a relaxed walk with lots of time to ask questions, satisfy your curiosity and expand your perspective of native plant life. Knowledge required: Perfect for beginners! Group size: 15 maximum. Minimum age: Whilst we think this event is best suited to those 10+ you know your child best, if you have a young budding nature lover who would enjoy this walk they are welcome to join. If you’re bringing a child along with you please do let us know their age when booking. This is the morning walk, you can find the afternoon walk here.
